Wednesday in Port Charles was a frustrating day this week - - poor adorable Dante is still not getting any, Ethan was unnecessarily harsh with Kristina, and so help me Jasus, if Johnny actually shot Lucky at the end of the show, I will lose my flipping mind.
On the plus-side however, Kristina and Patrick joined Jax and Johnny in the ranks of the Sonny is a jackass hit-parade today, so the number of characters who are allowed to speak such blasphemy has doubled since this time last year - score! We are making glacial-like progress on this front.
I have two nominations for best writing Emmy today - -
First, we have Kristina (who has decided to take Kiefer back based upon Molly's ten year old Emily Bronte-worshiping advice) standing up to Sonny when he tried to horn in on her date at Kelly's.
Sonny{to Kiefer}: Leave
Kristina: Kiefer and I were in the middle of something, and you're the one who's not invited, so I don't have anything to say to you, so why don't you just keep going?
I know that I'm not supposed to take Kristina seriously because she's a hot and cold running teenager who got back together with a guy who hits her based on advice given by a lovestruck child who thinks that Jason and Sam are the most romantic story ever told, but I cheered when she told Sonny where to get off.
Loudly.
Sonny responds to her statement with a hilarious attempt at parenting that involves criticizing Kristina's "attitude" (as if he himself weren't the most petulant of whining titty-babies
), demanding that he not be "challenged" (you hear that Krissy? No polysyllabic words
) and that he be treated with "respect" as her father (fill in your own cutting remark here_________).
Later, Patrick visited Sonny to admit that he's known about Dante's paternity for the better part of a year (not that he owed him an explanation at all, mind you). Sonny takes the opportunity to blame Patrick, much the way he blames Jax and Olivia
for the fact that he knowingly shot a police officer.
Patrick: Sonny, I don't know what it's like in mob-world, but in the world that I live in, you shoot an unarmed cop that saved your son, that's crossing the line. And I know everything you did for Stone and for Robin, but that doesn't give you a free-pass to commit murder and mayhem whenever you feel . . .
Sonny: {interrupting} Good to know where you stand, doctor.
Patrick: Yeah, well it's good to tell you.
It was good for me too, Patty. I am positively giddy at the rampant truth-telling.
It was a good day for dialogue, don't harsh my buzz with reality.
I know, I know, Kristina's moment of clarity is meant to be an error in judgment that she realizes was a mistake after Kiefer beats the crap out of her and Daddy explains that this never would have happened if evil Alexis had allowed him more access while she was growing up.
And yes, Sonny's comment about how Patrick never makes mistakes is clearly foreshadowing for whatever ill-advised mistake-riddled Lisa storyline is coming down the pike. However, I can still say with absolute confidence that whatever Guza has in mind for Patrick, it will not involve shooting Emma in the chest, so
Sonny.
I know I shouldn't get so excited about what probably amounts to an aberration, but in a largely unwinable war, it's the small victories that truly matter.
